Holding

by E.E Curtis

I hold it away so sparks won’t burn you

Sweet child

Some days life will harm you

I can’t keep it away

Can’t always protect

But my love

I’ve been building up within you

since before you were born

So in times of need it can be

your fortress

a giant bear hug

Life is a beautiful and exciting fireworks show

But smoke will come

And sparks can burn

I can’t always hold it away.

But I can hold you.

Dedicated to the victims and contemplators of suicide.

I wrote this poem on a day I found out a young person at my children's school had committed suicide. Suicide touches so many of our lives and one heartbreaking thing about it is that most of us are loved more than we know.
